It is children who normally suffer from abdominal migraine from age five to nine years with it being more prevalent in girls than boys. Some adults suffer this migraine type as well. The difference is that there is usually no headache with abdominal migraine and it has a much earlier age of onset.

Children with a family history will be more likely to have abdominal migraine, and that most of these children will later develop migraines. Always contact your doctor when you have questions about migraine symptoms. The key to a correct diagnosis of abdominal migraine is the family history; a correct diagnosis cannot be reached based on the symptoms alone.

The most common symptom is abdominal pain with this migraine type. Abdominal migraine is not easy to diagnose because the abdominal symptoms could indicate a number of problems. The child may also feel nauseous and dizzy, have diarrhea and vomiting, be pale and irritable and be sensitive to loud noises and bright lights. The child may have dark rings around the eyes and look flushed. The pain is usually felt in the mid abdomen and lasts for an hour or two, then may return several times in the next few days. There may be other symptoms showing during this time.

Several criteria have been set out by the International Headache Society which must be met before a proper diagnosis can be made. The criteria set out a range of symptoms and situations that must be present before a firm diagnosis can be given. Yet again your own medical professional will be the man or women to contact if you currently have any abdominal migraines. The variety of other conditions that could be indicated by the symptoms must be eliminated before an abdominal migraine diagnosis can be made.

While abdominal migraine has only been officially recognized as a type of migraine since late in the 1990s, there were pediatricians who correctly made the link between these abdominal symptoms and migraines as early as the 1960s. Some children were diagnosed with a form of childhood migraine even in those early days.

This type of migraine is less common than other types, but maybe it is not correctly diagnosed because of the generality of the symptoms. This means that there is no recommended treatment for this condition. Once abdominal migraine is diagnosed, the treatment is similar to that for other forms of migraine. Because of the young age of most of the patients, traditional migraine medications may be too strong.

The symptoms are best treated with rest, although analgesics, sedatives and anti-nausea drugs may be prescribed. The best treatment during an attack is complete quiet and bed rest in a darkened room, similar to what other migraine sufferers need.

As with many migraine sufferers, a child with abdominal migraine may be sensitive to some foods, which act as triggers. Known migraine food triggers could be eliminated from the child’s diet, one at a time, to see if any of the foods impact on the attacks. Some of the common triggers include dairy, tomatoes, artificial colors and flavors, manufactured meats, preservatives, citrus and chocolate. Over-tiredness, anxiety and stress are also common migraine symptoms.

The information in this article will give you a better understanding of this form of migraine and maybe help in getting an accurate diagnosis for your child. Perhaps you could try eliminating the migraine food triggers to see if this helps the symptoms.
