In case your faucet has been dripping or leaking for some time then maybe it’s time for replacing the bathtub faucet.
Easy as it may seem there’re a few of things you should look in to while changing the faucet.
Just follow the ideas presented here and bathtub faucet replacement will be a fairly easy task.
Faucets enable water through a pipe to be utilized in controlled way. Usually almost all bathtubs have either 2 valve or three valve faucets.
Faucets generally start dripping or leaking when their washers become stiff and corroded. Water pressure acts to hasten the process. In some older design faucets there used to be neoprene or rubber washers. In most newer systems cartridges are used in place of washers.
It’s almost always necessary to buy a correct faucet. Faucets come in lots of sizes and styles. When you need to replace a faucet it’s essential to take exact measurement of holes from centre to centre. Style maybe optional but size is not.
And you must have a correct set of tools to change a faucet. There are various types of wrenches for plumbing jobs.
For square or hex nuts open end wrenches are the best as they have smooth jaws. If your pipe is chrome coated and you do not desire to mar the surface then you may opt for strap wrenches. Incase the pipe diameter is small then you need to have a vise grip wrench.
Typically 2 pipe wrenches are required for almost any plumbing . One to hold and the other to turn.
While installing a bathtub faucet look for the faucet assembly behind the walls. Typically builders would have provided a rear access panel in the rear of tub. Read the instruction manual while assembling the two valve or 3 valve water faucets.
Here are some usual steps to replace a faulty faucet.
• To start with turn off the water. You might turn off the main water supply for the entire home.
• Now remove the faucet handle. Pull gently. Over the years the handle may have got welded to stem. So do not force it. If it doesn’t come out gently then use a special handle puller.
• Now remove the stem and the trim assembly. The stem assembly is needed to control the quantity and temperature of water dispensed to the tub. Use a bath socket wrench to dis-assemble this.
• Now check the washer . Incase it is torn or brittle then this is the cause for the leak. Take both the washer and the stem for replacement.
• Examine the seats. In case they are rough then they too need to be changed. Use a seat wrench to remove it.
• While changing the various components you should just put it all back together. Grease the nut threads, washer and stem threads. Afterward put them all back together and fasten the nuts.
• If it’s a cartridge type faucet then remove the handle and trim. Then replace the cartridge.
So with a little bit of know-how you might fix it yourself for $80-$90.
In the same vein, it’s easy to fix that leaking shower faucet either.
